alright, lets do this

i am EXHAUSTED!
so any comments that are disjointed, weird, really long, run on sentency, don't make sense.. just hang with me. i'm trying ;)

DISCLAIMER: I JUST FINISHED WRITING THIS, AND DECIDED IT WAS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THIS LITTLE DISCLAIMER. ITS LONG AND WORDY. YOU CAN SKIM IF YOU WANT, BUT ITS ALL IMPORTANT I THINK (EXCEPT THE PART WHERE I SEE LANCE BASS AND LISTEN TO TYLER HILTON, BUT I JUST TOLD YOU, SO DEFINIATLY SKIM OVER THAT PART)

who knew there would be so much to discuss after 24 hours. craziness

i forgot to follow up with anthony david tomorrow. i am going to MAKE IT A POINT to do such a thing tomorrow.

we heard this band yesterday called Distance To Empty. the band consisted of three white dudes and a black singer. crazy, huh? think of it like this: r&b voice backed with a decent band. it was awesome. real real talent. plus, they were reallyfunny. for one song, they all came to the front, the bassist stood front center, the drummer off to the side, and the singer and guitarist were on the side, with an acoustic guitar. they sang a song about cereal (i think it was cereal) and the bassist acted out every word. i don't think its coming across as funny, but trust me, hilarious. plus the song wasn't so bad (i dont think it was about cereal anymore. i can't remember now. crap!)
i bring this up, because not only were they GREAT but they were cheap. i think it was $1000. check out the songs on their myspace. i wish you could hear the song "Agree to Disagree" because it was INCREDIBLE.

ANOTHER SIDE NOTE! what i am looking for right now are cheap lawn concerts. i remember the committee wanted to invest in a larger (not like, huge, but medium sized) concert for the kick off in fall and the 'send off' at the end of the fall semester. i am looking right now for like, good quality but cheap lawn shows. and thats what the semester will look like. do we all agree on that?
ANOTHER SIDE NOTE I JUST THOUGHT OF! do we want, for family weekend, another cover band? if so, what band do you want? like, cover wise? if not, we can think of something else. but let me know what you think of that!

so last night, instead of staying in the convention center, they had a night on the landing (which is like the area of downtown located by the arch/mississippi river). so we all got to have our pick of four clubs/bars and go listen to some bands in an envirmonment they are most used to playing in!

the bands were SWEET. the bar we went to (don't worry mom and dad, i'm only 20! couldn't drink!:) ) was AWESOME too. it was like, five stories. seriously. there was a bar on top of a bar, and the bar on top had three floors and then the bar we were in had two floors, so we were super underground. it was cool. if you are of age and in st louis go to Throttle, cause its awesome.
back to the point of the blog: music.
the first dude ROCKED. all of these guys were out of nashville, just another little side note. the first guy was named ANDY DAVIS. try to keep ANDY DAVIS and ANTHONY DAVID's names straight. boy is it hard. andy davis was great. he played on the piano. he also played the guitar. he couldn't bring his full band, so i didn't hear him full band. but he's so good. seriously. the board (whole board, and the whole club) loved him. i am going to check out his prices tomorrow and talk to the agent.

another band. we are probably DEFINATELY going to bring this band, just because they bring some diversity, fun, and excitement to our roster then. Jason Jones band (www.myspace.com/jonesville). they are country, and they are pretty good. even for country. :) but keith anderson did well at UK, need i explain why? i think country is important. pair that sucker up with a lawn concert and the thing nearly promotes itself. (except not really. haha)

i also had the WONDERFUL privledge to hear Tyler Hilton! my friend ali will be so freaking jealous of me. i also saw LANCE BASS!!!! sadly, he didn't sing bye bye bye or any of those nsync songs. but seriously. so cool nonetheless, right?

let me think of what else i heard today thats an option..
i cant think of anything i heard. hmm...

OH! branden!
check out Life in Jersey. they are here also this weekend. i don't know if they are booking or just hanging out (how dumb would that be?) but i got their cd for free, so i gave it a listen, and they're sweet! i don't think a screamo/hardcore/metal band would be good for outside. right now, we're just trying for lawn concerts. but i agree we need more than just the acousticy, country, etc for outside. so here's just an option.

here's something else completely random for everyone. here's two more bands i personally love, know are cheap, and know are fun.
• automatic loveletter
• the apathy eulogy

i've seen them both. juliett from automatic loveletter = amazing. plus she's gorgeous. plus she's really nice. and she's talented. and this is all coming from someone who can't STAND when girls are in bands or sing (unless its like hilary duff or rihanna or the pussycat dolls. yeah, i said it)
the apathy eulogy are also great guys. i saw them a year or so back, two nights in a row, and they are awesome. plus they are just down to earth, fun guys. they like music, they are in this for music, and they have a passion for it (who doesn't though, right?)
so while you're checking out bands, might as well give those two a listen as well. band overload, huh?

i haven't had a chance to check out the bands you all have listed. i really want to, but i spend 14 hours a day listening to music. so the day i get back from naca, i'm going to take a 3 day long nap and listen to all the bands you guys have sent me. because i DO want to hear what you have also.

before i get all girly and thank you profusely for commenting, reading, suggesting, taking this seriously (because i can't tell you how proud i am of you guys to report back to the board that the concert committee is commenting and telling me what they think!!), i have one more thing to throw at you.

when lawn shows wind down in november (for obvious reasons), we'll have some time. but not too much. keep in consideration thanksgiving, finals, studying, christmas break, potential end of semester show). so we'll have some time to work with, but not enough for some more concerts. i was thinking this. how about a lecture? why don't we do something outside of the box, but still with music?

the music industry is at SUCH a critical point right now. its collapsing. record labels are screwing over bands, bands are screwing over record labels, independently releasing cds (see also: radiohead, butch walker), people aren't buying music, piracy is ridiculous, hip hop/rap is TERRIBLE.. etc. all of this is flipping the music industry head over heels. its kind of scary. i was thinking of maybe tracking down some people, maybe a exec from a record label, maybe someone who writes music journalism, maybe an artist, to come talk about where they think the future of music is headed. give us some insight into HOW the industry got this bad, EXACTLY how piracy is hurting labels, bands, and us. how bands/labels are handling the digital media, the craze, etc. i think this is a chance for us to give the campus of UK a real insight (and us too!) into the industry and how our lives/entertainment/music is being/will be changed.

let me know what you think. there is also a guy here who does lectures on the HISTORY of music. we pick a decade, he brings his speakers, he sets everythign up, he talks, shows video, plays music, all around one decade. he will talk about what went on in history, how that shaped and developed music, what music innovations there were, who was big, why they were big, how they got big, what they wrote about, why they wrote about it, culturally, what was accepted, what wasnt accepted, etc. he talks at A LOT of colleges. he has been around for years. he looks like he's been around for years, but MAN was he knowledgeable.

so there's another lecture topic. both could be great, and i think it would be awesome to have like, two nights. first night, history, second night, future. let me know!

sorry its so long. i ramble, i realize. i've been tying for like 45 minutes now, so i'm positive this is long.

the coffeehouse idea is still into effect. however, i forgot about these issues:
anthony david is about $1000. cheap. however, not for a coffeehouse. think: rasdell gallery, only 100 people max. price isnt worth the audience. not in a mean way at all. he just deserves more than that. so we're thinking of other people.
however, do we want anthony david for a lawn concert? or do we want other people?

THINGS TO COMMENT ON/LOOK UP/TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK:
1) distance to empty
2) lawn concerts are full steam ahead, right?
3) family weekend cover band - yes or no?
4) andy davis
5) jason jones band (www.myspace.com/jonesville)
6) two bands i also threw out (automatic loveletter and apathy eulogy)
7) life in jersey
8) music lecture - history, future, or both?
9) coffeehouse idea
10) tell me to learn how to sum things up. do it. i need to hear it for myself, not from myself ;)

love you all. have a good night!

commenting on my own blog. how lame.

forever the sickest kids.. i forgot to mention them. i didn't talk to their agent. they were good, but i think we could get someone better for cheaper. is that okay with you guys, or no?

I mentioned last semester about having Tyler Hilton come. That would be cool.

I think that's smart. There are a lot of bands with the same sound.

I'm really digging Distance To Empty and you make it sound like they can put on a great show so I'm feeling good about them. I think that's great quality for the price.

I'm trying to understand... is it going to be two medium concerts and the rest are going to be smaller lawn concerts and maybe a cover band for family weekend and that's it?

Maybe it's just because of how the cover band last semestor almost screwed everything up and we were kinda scrambling but I'm not really feeling a cover band. I'd like to hear if it was really popular or not when The Beatles cover band came. Maybe I'll change my mind

Andy Davis sounds great for a lawn concert when he plays his guitar and he also sounds great on the piano for a coffee house kinda thing.

I think Jason Jones Band will do well if we tag-team it with a lawn concert artist. Is that what you meant with "pair that sucker up with a lawn concert" or did you just mean to have the band be a lawn concert by itself?

I agree, Juliett from automatic loveletter does look gorgeous but I wasn't feeling it. Same thing with apathy eulogy and life in jersey....just not my cup of tea. Although I agree rap music is terrible right now (although I've always beleived RAP sucks and HIP HOP is good) I don't know how well a lecture will go over on campus. I'd like to discuss it more at the next meeting.

Do we HAVE to have the coffee house event in the gallery? Is there anywhere bigger? I really think that Anthony (not andy) David would be great.

PS I was wondering is there anyway that we could ask WRFL if they could play music from the band that will be doing out next show in the weeks prior to the actual show's date as a way of promoting it. Could we ask for a song from the band at the top of the hour ever hour (or something like that....I'm just spitballing) and we could promote that. That way no one has to seach the internet or buy the CD before the band comes, they just gotta flip on the radio while they're in their car or dorm. Just a thought. Tell me what ya think

The apathy eulogy and loveletter: did not like either of them. apathy isnt terrible but i still didnt like em.

If distance to empty can put on that good of a show and interact well with the audience i think you should talk to them. They also have a decent sound.

Jason Jones Band: Pretty good sound and i think they would be awesome for a lawn concert (since we seem so desperate to fill those in)

Andy davis has great vocals and also would be good for a lawn concert or maybe even the coffeehouse thing (with a bigger venue of course)

BUT WE STILL NEED HARD ROCK, stop with the emo stuff

Hey Hey! I’m sorry I haven’t posted anything yet, I know I suck. I have been keeping up with all of your updates though. I’m so impressed with everyone’s feedback and Louise you are pretty much amazing and doing a wonderful job!

So lets see…I really like FLOREZ, but apparently who doesn’t. lol I think they would be great for a lawn show. Very Gavin Degraw feel.

Jupiter One, I’m a fan. I really really like it. They are so different from anything we’ve brought so I don’t know how they would do though. Probably not good for acoustic either.

Distance to Empty has a fun vibe. Plus you said they put on a great show. I think they would be really entertaining and something a little different for us to bring.

Another one I liked a lot was Andy Davis, another perfect one for a lawn concert. He’s got a great voice!

I also like the idea of bringing something a little more hardcore like Life in Jersey. They are pretty sweet…..

And of course Louise you know I pretty much love every type of music you do and I loved both of the bands you suggested. I also definitely wanna check into someone along the lines of The Sickest Kids You Know.

I love the idea of a lecture and everything, but I just don’t know how many kids on campus would come out for it. It would be something that I know everyone on the board would love and I think it would be really interesting personally, I’m just trying to think of what people would come out to, I guess it depends on who the speaker is.

Coffee House idea=great. Yes on the lawn concerts. And as far as family weekend…I mean we went from the Beatles which I thought was so fun and a good turn out to U2 which was pretty disastrous. Maybe if we got someone classic and fun like the Jackson 5 or something.

Ok so now I’m the one being really long. Sorry bout that, just had a lot to catch up!

Hey i am so sorry this is the first time i am getting to comment because i havnt even had a chance to just sit still for more than 5 minutes but i took a listen at a few of the bands:

Distance to empty: kind of funky but i like it

Andy Davis: i could see as a lawn concert but i dont know how acustics do with being outside i dont but i liked it, very chill

Jason Jones: not too into country but i could see where it would bring an audience around here

forever the sickest kids: i them they have a good sound

Florez: i LOVE this i would love to see them come here

anyway i am sorry for being such a slacker but i love the idea of tribute bands and lawn concerts it sounds great
